Every Video Production goes through a series of stages or processes as it moves along the path from ‘inception’, or the very first thought you may have about it, up to receiving the final, completed version, ready for emailing to your clients, uploading to your website, or distribution of DVD.
These three main stages are common to every film or video production made, and will give you an idea of the costs, complexities and decisions required at each point in the process.
Pre-Production
Although no one stage can be said to be the most important, this one would probably win on points! It involves detailed planning of precisely what needs to be said and shown in order to fulfil and exceed your expectations. If the Video involves speaking or narration, then a script will be developed based on comprehensive meetings between our Script Writer and yourself. This script will include all narration, a brief description of all footage to be included, and all writing, text, graphics, pictures and logos that are to be included. This is your opportunity to contribute by suggesting locations, ideas, facts and key marketing concepts you want to see in the final product.
Production
This is the actual ‘shooting’ stage. Our professional TV crew visit each required location and shoot the video footage. If your product could potentially end up being broadcasted (for example as a TV commercial) or seen on Blu-ray then we will shoot in top of the range High Definition. This also ‘future proofs’ your footage for technological change in the coming years. The crew will typically consist of a Camera operator and Sound recordist, a Field Producer/Director and a Lighting ‘gaffer’. Frequently (in lower budget projects) two or more of these roles are combined by the one person.
The other areas that come under the heading of ‘production’ are directing and recording the ‘voice over’ performance, the creative design of any graphics, logos or images required and the writing and recording of any musical backing tracks.
Post-Production
After all the various components have been sourced, shot or recorded comes the exciting point of the process where everything is put together. Using the script as a template, the Editor works to make sure that the very best pictures, words and music are all put together in the most interesting, informative and entertaining way possible. Technological developments in recent years have enabled even the most modest of Video projects to feature special effects, colour grading and other areas of ‘digital trickery’ that even a few years ago would have been prohibitively expensive to be included at minimal extra cost.
Finally your Video project is ready to be viewed from the comfort of your own PC or DVD player, and with final approval is ready to start making you money, informing your clients, and/or bringing extra customers through your door or onto your website.
